Welcome and thanks for visiting! For our trip to Disney World and Universal in April 2026 the rides, especially the rollercoasters, were the main attraction for me. So much so I even lost a few kg’s in the months leading up to it! As the rides were so varied, and there’s a lot of them, I thought I would rate them so if you have limited time, hopefully I can help prioritise!
There is no special formula I’m using… this is completely my own opinion. Whilst it won’t always be detailed, things like the queue length, ride time, aesthetics all come into it!

Rides we did NOT experience
Unfortunately, even with all the time in the world, attractions at parks are constantly undergoing renovation, so you would be very lucky to find everything open when you visit. I thought I would provide a list of what we didn’t to to avoid disappointment further down!
In total there must be over 50 rides that are not scored. Mostly made up of rides that are aimed at younger kids. Notable rides not experienced / closed in no particular order:
- DAK – Kali River Rapids – Didn’t open until a bit later in the morning and we were already doing other stuff by then
- DMK – Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – Closed for major refurb
- DHS – Alien Swirling Saucers – More of a kids ride I recall, but it was Toy Story…
- DHS – Rock’n’Rollercoaster – Closed for major refurb and rebrand I think
- DEP – Spaceship Earth – A ride in the big EPCOT globe. Disappointed to miss this but at least it wasn’t a proper ‘coaster.
- UIA – Dr Doom’s Fearfall – Too big for the chair! Delighted that this was the only ride in all parks bar some of the slides in the water parks! Looked cool and may have scored a 3 or 4 by the looks!
- UIA – Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls – People were exiting the ride drenched. We just couldn’t be arsed.

I’m a little sparse with the number of photos versus rides. I suppose it makes sense with a lot of the rides being indoors, so use your imagination (or YouTube them if you’re desperate).
Enjoying rides as a larger person…
Before the trip this was a constant worry. So much so, I started playing padel religiously since January and ensured I met 10,000 steps a day minimum. Even so, I still weighed in at roughly 22 stone / 300 lbs / 135kg. I’m lucky in one way that many think I visually look nowhere near this much and I’m very active considering, but it does mean I have very broad shoulders, a beer belly and tree-trunk thighs!
I am delighted to say that from all rides rated / attempted on this page, there was only one I couldn’t fit on. However my calf’s, of all things, meant I couldn’t ride Avatar: Flight of Passage a second time, just two days after the first! You will generally be OK with a lap bar, but I struggled with over the shoulder restraints as pictured below.
The example test seat is from the Hulk Coaster. Many thrill rides in Universal resorts had these before the queuing started, but were not available in Disney which was disappointing as they would save people a lot of unnecessary waiting. Remember some rides have queues of 3+ hours… Some of the better/bigger/newer rides also have designated seats that can accommodate large people. In the image below you’ll see the left seat is slightly bigger than with a more generous belt.
The Doctor Doom ride was the single ride I couldn’t enjoy as mentioned above, but at least I knew early on which saved 20 minutes queuing and the embarrassment at the ride itself. If you do get kicked off a ride for being too big, staff usually give you free queue-jump tickets for another ride. This certainly softens the blow but cannot be used on the most popular of rides.
The “rope drop” tactics.
Potentially the biggest benefit of staying in a resort hotel is that you can enter the parks earlier, and can usually start making your journey to the park at silly-o-clock. The very first day we were waiting for the bus by 5:30, to enter the park at 7:30 to leg it to the first ride before it opened at 8am. Three queues but it did save hours off one long queue for each ride, and saved us probably the equivalent of an extra day(!) over a fortnight.

OK then… are you ready for the list?!
Feel free to let me know your own favourites and criticise my opinions, my wife certainly has, to the point I’m sure she printed off divorce papers at some point during the scoring. One thing I am certain of is my number one choice! Rides with similar stars are listed in alphabetical order, there’s no way I’m ranking them 63 to 1!
Rides I rated ONE STAR out of five.
⭐ Constellation Carousel UEU – Not the worst of the worst (alphabetical order remember), but as the centre piece of Epic Universe it’s a bit bang average and lacks the nostalgia that the DMK version has. Mikayla went on this for the sake of it whilst I went for a ciggie. Looked pretty.
⭐ Dragon Racer’s Rally UEU – Your ‘dragon’ is attached to a central pole that spins around and you use your own momentum to swing and can even go upside down. However, it got boring very quickly and glad the ride was less than two minutes – a very short ride.
⭐ E.T. Adventure UUS – Ok I’m feeling guilty only three rides in. This suspended ride is one of the oldest in the Universal parks and the animations must have been good for their day. I’m glad they’ve kept it for the nostalgia, though.
⭐ Figment Journey into Imagination DEP – Slow indoor ride that explores our different senses. Might be fun for kids but not for me and very much showing its age having opened in 2002. Needs an upgrade.
⭐ Flight of the Hippogriff UIA – Down scoring this loads because of the queue size vs ride length. A rollercoaster but more for kids. Would be alright with no queue but if anything it’s too fast to take in the amazing scenery of nearby Hogwarts castle as the wider theme park.
⭐ Haunted Mansion DMK – I remember leaving this ride in Disneyland Paris feeling similarly underwhelmed. If you’re going to do a scary ride, make it for adults and actually scary. This half-way stuff makes a long-ish ride (usually a good thing) just drag on. Mikayla reminds me it is SUPPOSED to be for kids… Broke down a few times whilst on the ride.
⭐ Little Mermaid Under the Sea DMK – Slow ride with animatronics throughout. Seemed very dated but busy due to it’s location behind the castle in Magic Kingdom. Broke down about 5 times and ended up on the ride for 15 minutes longer than otherwise. Torturous.
⭐ Na’vi River Journey DAK – Google tells me this has rated reviews of 4.4 out of 5! Rubbish. This ride gets the accolade of my WORST out of them all. It’s a slow boat ride through dark tunnels. It’s boring, had ridiculously long queues and hasn’t got the excuse of being old, having opened in 2017. The vibrant colours, and impressive animatronics tech does not save it.
⭐ Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges UIA – A water rapids ride that is fast flowing and has a good bit of thrill. Lost a load of stars because, whilst I don’t care about getting wet, 90% of the waterfalls are unavoidable and utterly pointless. The unnecessary wet shoes were a nightmare. Crocs were in the hotel room.
⭐ The Seas with Nemo & Friends DEP – Following the theme of a slow ride, or ‘journey’ through some dark tunnels with animatronics. I’m not the target audience for these types of rides but if I were 5 years old I’d find it a bit naff.
⭐ Tomorrowland Speedway DMK – It was OK to visit shortly before close as there was a minimal queue. The ride is basically a full-size Scalextric track. The cars go faster than expected but can only follow a single track with pedals to ‘go’ and ‘stop’.
Rides I rated TWO STARS out of five.
⭐⭐ Astro Orbiter DMK – Mikayla rode this on her own for whatever reason. Scrapes 2 stars just because of the views across Magic Kingdom.
⭐⭐ Fast and the Furious Ride UUS – One of a few I forgot about until coming to finalise this list. You’re sat in a large vehicle that moves around although the screen does most of the heavy lifting on this one (prepare for screens/projections to become a running theme for Universal rides). This ride has now closed. A newer version is currently in development.
⭐⭐ Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros DEP – Another slow boat ride through a tunnel. Looking back I am not quite sure how this escaped a one star rating.
⭐⭐ It’s a Small World DMK – Weirdly the most “Disney” ride there is, yet not featuring any famous characters from the films. Having been to three now, in Paris and Hong Kong too, they’re all a bit shit and clearly survive on nostalgia alone. Very lucky to escape a 1 star but short queues most of the time. Features Scotland but not Wales.
⭐⭐ Mad Hatter’s Teacups DMK – Another stalwart of any Disney theme park and closer to a 3 than a 1 star. Great for all ages and can be used for some good photos and video on the ride itself.
⭐⭐ Men in Black: Alien Attack UUS – This ride travels through a city landscape with aim of killing all the aliens with a shooter attached to the ride vehicle. There’s a fun section during which you are pitted against another vehicle. I’ve been generous with similar shooter style rides as you’ll see below. However, considering the fact that I nearly forgot to include this, it falls to a 2*.
⭐⭐ Minions: Illumination’s Villain-Con Blast – Managed to fit this one in when there was a very minimal queue. Unlike other shooter rides you stand during this one, transported around on a conveyer belt equipped with your zapper. Enjoyable, albeit quite crowded along the ride. Not far off a 3.
⭐⭐ Peter Pan’s Flight DMK – An attractive ride with a close tie in with the film. You ride in a flying ship following the story of the film from London to Neverland. This was only the second ride we went on which helped, but it was a long queue and unless you’re a first timer, not worth it.
⭐⭐ Pirates of the Caribbean DMK – A high scoring 2 star (should perhaps be a 3). Unlike similar dark rides, this ride benefits from a reasonable drop. Not as good as the one in Paris, if I recall correctly, but comfortable, cool and quite long.
⭐⭐ Soarin’ Around the World DEP – Surprisingly enjoyable. The ride simulates gliding past many global famous landmarks. I noticed that there has been a change to American locations only in August 2026.
⭐⭐ Tomorrowland Transit Authority Peoplemover DMK – A strange ride as you would expect it to have a stop rather than just one circular route. I am questioning whether this should even be considered a ride, but the extremely comfortable seating arrangements and around 10-15 minute duration after 25,000 steps were very welcome as it tours around Tomorrowland.
⭐⭐ Transformers The Ride 3D UUS – This ride scored low as I almost forgot it altogether. You’re in a car that moves around inside on a journey assisted by screen projection. Similar to lots of other rides, but others weren’t quite as forgettable. However, this could be my lack of interest in the film franchise.
⭐⭐ Yoshi’s Adventure UEU – Mikayla rode this while waiting for me to have a ciggy. She said it was very similar to the Peoplemover, with better theming. However, it’s simply a slow comfortable ride with pretty good views of Epic Universe. Don’t wait too long for this one.
Rides I rated THREE STARS out of five.
⭐⭐⭐ Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin DMK – Closed beyond our last day as it was being updated. We were really fortunate that the ride opened for a few hours for a preview. A fun competitive shooter ride. You compete against your travel partner so obviously, I was given no competition. Very similar to the Paris equivalent. Toy Story bias.
⭐⭐⭐ Frozen Ever After DEP – Unexpectedly good. Potentially worth the really long queues. It’s a dark boat ride but it does feature a reverse drop to give it more excitement than comparable rides.
⭐⭐⭐ Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey UIA – The ride queue takes you through Hogwarts. Mikayla was such an obvious nerd that staff allowed her behind the barriers to sit in the Gryffindor Common Room. The queue alone is worth the three stars. The ride itself does rely on screens but has a decent story and an exciting ride vehicle that drags you around after Harry and co.
⭐⭐⭐ Jungle Cruise DMK – A fun faux safari boat ride. This one can thank the skipper for the 3 stars. The skipper (tour guide) really controls the quality of the ride. We had a great one, but a poor one would drop the stars to 2 and a phenomenal one would drag it up to 4. A Magic Kingdom staple. We rode at night. No queues and no less fun from what we could tell.
⭐⭐⭐ Kilimanjaro Safari DAK – This is quite difficult to judge because I’m not a fan of animals in captivity and I’ve seen all of the headline animals before. I did like that the animals had ample space to roam / live and each ride is unique as the driver, while following the same route, seems to work around the animals available at the time. It was a very long queue, but it was a long ride with lots to enjoy and our driver was a lovely lady from Alabama with an abundance of knowledge.
⭐⭐⭐ Living with the Land DEP – A very slow boat ride that gives a surprising insight into a very different side of Disney which grows lots of plants – herbs, vegetables etc. It’s essentially a huge greenhouse with a number of different biomes. They even engage in aquaculture – basically they have fish. There’s a research lab too and we were told that lots of what is farmed, is then used in the restaurants around the Disney Parks. Comfortable and informative – a great PR exercise.
⭐⭐⭐ Mickey & Minnie Runaway Railway DHS – This is a trackless dark ride which takes you inside a cartoon of a problematic train journey. Mikayla REALLY liked this. Perhaps this one was less enjoyable for me as it was late in the day, I was tired and the queue was huge.
⭐⭐⭐ Mine Cart Madness UEU – This Donkey Kong ride was clearly aimed at Millennials with the DK Country Classic music, characters and imagery. Great fun. We went for single rider as the normal queue is far too long which affects its rating. This was out of operation loads due to the weather.
⭐⭐⭐ Mission: Space DEP – This ride places you in a spaceship simulator and mimics take off and the impacts of G-Force on astronauts. With smaller queues than its neighbours, it gets a 3 stars on the effects of the G-Force alone. There are two options with green affecting guests less harshly that the orange mission. We chose the orange mission, of course, but beware because there are literal sick bags at the ready.
⭐⭐⭐ Monsters Unchained UEU – This ride was surprisingly good given the shorter queue. Lots of spinning around as you’re dragged through Frankenstein’s experiments. The queue features themselves are quite impressive and there are a few jump scares on the ride. An actual scary ride – unlike Haunted Mansion.
⭐⭐⭐ Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure DEP – Almost identical to the Paris version as the ride vehicle dances along a kitchen floor, 3D screens offer a rat’s eye view. A solid 3, even though the ride broke down a number of times while we were at the front of the queue.
⭐⭐⭐ Seven Dwarves Mine Train DMK – This was our very first ride on day 1. We rope dropped this and I certainly wouldn’t be too pleased waiting 2 hours for it. The ride has one of the longest queues in any park, but it isn’t really a major ride or epic in any way. This is a fun, child-friendly rollercoaster with reasonable thrills.
⭐⭐⭐ Skull Island Reign of Kong UIA – Lucky to get a 3 given our 40 minute extended wait due to issues on the ride. You are in a car while the open world forest projected around you shows Kong fighting off a dinosaur or something (I forgot). The jolting vehicle involves you directly in the action.
⭐⭐⭐ Star Wars Rise of the Resistance DHS – Unfortunately, we rode single rider missing a significant amount of the pre-show. Mikayla has watched a video online and reckons the queue is worth it if you have a chance of a reasonable wait time. The ride itself is essentially trackless dark ride (sort of similar to Ratatouille, but obviously a very different theme).
⭐⭐⭐ Star Wars Smugglers Run DHS – We rushed to this following a rope drop on Slinky Dog Dash. There was no queue but it was a hell of a distance to walk to get the the ride. You’re in a multiplayer simulator with four people total each taking on a different role. It was different to anything else.
⭐⭐⭐ Star Wars Star Tours DHS – Probably my preferred ride of these Star Wars rides that are bunched together. I think there’s a similar ride in Paris, where you’re in a 20-30 people simulator as you zoom around the galaxy. Low wait times compared to the other two helped.
⭐⭐⭐ Toy Story Mania DHS – A shooter game with a bit of a twist as this one is broken up to five different levels where you compete with other players in your cart. I remember this being good fun. More Toy Story bias and you wouldn’t be too annoyed being in a long queue as there’s a good bit to see along the line.
⭐⭐⭐ Tron: Lightcycle/Run DMK – Ooooh, one of the big rides scoring low. This is most peoples Magic Kingdom rope drop choice, and ours on the final day. By the time the ride actually opened, there must have been 500+ behind us and the sheer length of the paths inside tells me it gets worse later in the day, with wait times up to 3 hours! Also, the ride itself is really short, the highlight being the outside bit of track shown in the photo.
Rides I rated FOUR STARS out of five.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Bowser’s Challenge UEU – Low scoring 4 in large part for the long queues. This is another shooter but incorporates the Mario Kart theme extremely well, assisted by the 4D visuals. This is enough to make it a 4 although the scoring of the fast-paced ride I found confusing.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Curse of the Werewolf UEU – The queue for this ride took forever, it was close to closing time too, but I think it was because of issues with the ride. A rollercoaster that is the focal point of the Dark Universe area. Given it’s small footprint it was a decent length and more exciting than anticipated.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Guardians of Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind DEP – It was a shame to ride this only once. We roped-dropped it and still had a very long wait. An indoor ‘coaster in the dark but an upgrade on Space Mountain (spoiler: also scoring a 4 below). Had a very good theme to the ride and I believe your spinning journey is accompanied by one of several soundtracks, with ours being ‘One Way or Another’ by Blondie. Very enjoyable.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Harry Potter: Battle at the Ministry UEU – If I were scoring the queue or entrance to the ride, it would score a six. One of the newest rides we enjoyed, you are flung around in your car as you avoid Voldermort, Bellatrix et al as they try to take the ministry. At times it didn’t feel as though the scenes were being projected. Close to a 5.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Harry Potter: Escape from Gringotts UUS – The reason why Wales has the best flag in the world is because “it has a massive dragon on it”… so I must apply the same theory here. Again, very impressive queuing scenery as you go through the entrance hall of the bank (identical to the film). The ride itself is similar to the Battle at the Ministry above, maybe a bit less thrown around. A little way off a 5.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hiccup’s Wing Gliders UEU – What I assumed would be a kids ride was a surprisingly exciting rollercoaster throughout the Isle of Berk (How to Train Your Dragon land). Bit of an underrated gem perhaps.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Race through New York starring Jimmy Fallon UUS – Scores high because we thought it was going to be rubbish. We still thought it was going to be rubbish when we entered the ‘ride’ which is set up like a studio audience holding over 100 people. Yet when talk-show host Fallon introduces the ride and sets off in his racing car, the pursuit is really engaging as it wraps itself around Manhattan. How they could pull this off with such a huge floorspace to simulate was fantastic.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Revenge of the Mummy UUS – For one of the older rides at Universal Studios, perhaps I’m taking its age into consideration and being generous. Whilst the ride will not win the “best of” in any category, the journey through tombs and whatnot offers some special effects that are a welcome change to just a big screen.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Slinky Dog Dash DHS – My Toy Story bias is definitely in affect here as I’ve reduced scores for another rides because of queue time. We enjoyed this ride as one of our daily “early entrance and run to the ride” rope-drop tactic but doubt it would get a 4 had we waited for the usual two hours plus.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Space Mountain DMK – The ride itself for this classic is definitely a high scoring 4, as its an indoor rollercoaster, in the dark, that has a seemingly longer track than could possibly fit within its dome. No single rider and really dark, uncomfortable queues inside lets it down a little…. but a must-do nevertheless.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Spider-Man Experience UIA – I’ve actually left this ride to rate last, as I couldn’t decide where it fits on the list. It’s similar to 2-star Transformers and 3-star Ratatouille and I don’t want to be giving out 4’s willy-nilly. The ride is basically Spidey saving you from baddies. After careful consideration, this ride just about gets a 4. One the odd occasion Mr Parker saves you from impending doom using his webs, the jolts and the projected visuals did make the experience as realistic as possible. Impressed.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Test Track DEP – Hmmm, the ride must have been really good considering we were sat in our cars for 20-30 minutes afterwards whilst staff fixed some sort of technical problem, to the point we were given free ride passes on the way out. Thankfully, the ride itself was worth it. It starts of slow inside as you watch a few bits on the screens and once the lights go green your are slung outside on a faux racing track that wraps itself around the ride interior. When you thought that was OK but a bit short, there’s a bonus inside bit. Probably a low scoring 4 but impossible not to enjoy.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tiana’s Bayou Adventure DMK – An unexpected delight having appreciated a very short queue. What looks like a log-flume is so much more with a bit of story, multiple slides and an impressive climax. Surprised we only rode this once and scores a very high 4.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror DHS – Another classic Disney Parks ride. After a bit of a missable intro (part of the queuing process) you are strapped into a car within an elevator shaft. Considering the ride is pretty much 3 sharp sudden drops it has done well to be a solid 4. I liked the fact that on my second and even third ride I could not anticipate what would happen and when. Queues were OK.
Rides I rated FIVE STARS out of five.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Avatar Flight of Passage DAK – A relatively new ride immersed in a very attractive representation of the landscape familiar from the films. For this ride, you are strapped in as though you are riding a motorbike, to simulate riding on the back of a winged mountain banshee. Has a good storyline in the build-up and the visuals are faultless as you glide through Pandora. As I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t fit on this ride a second time (?!) thanks to my super-muscly calves and it is a verrrrry long wait if not rope-dropped. I reckon 95% of early entrants race to this ride first.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Expedition Everest DAK – My favourite Disney ride by a long, long way. Probably third overall. A classic rollercoaster with a Yeti theme that works really well. Minimal queues and if you’re early enough you can ride it three times in a row, like we did one morning. A few unexpected manoeuvres gives it the best possible experience without any loops. If the re-invented Thunder Mountain is better than this once finished you’re in for a treat.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hagrid’s Magical Creatures UIA – I have to battle a few contradictions here to keep this a 5. This ride had on average the longest queue of ANY ride, sometimes passing 300 minutes, unbelievably. We rode it twice and the single rider queue was not much faster at peak times. The queue is boring but the rollercoaster is well-themed and a good length. It doesn’t offer any inversions but does have a few surprises on the rollercoaster.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Incredible Hulk Coaster UIA – The first ride of our week at Universal. Having just come from 7 days at Disney, we were wondering of how Universal was going to match up. Enter this rollercoaster. The fact we had to use lockers for our belongings was a promising start. The queues at night-time were acceptable and it offered the first chance of the holiday to go upside-down on a ride… closely followed by the second, third and fourth time. From the boarding area you are rocketed upwards and maintain the speed for the whole journey. There’s something just a bit better when the ride is outside. Also had single rider and bigger seats. A very high scoring 5.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Simpsons Ride UUS – Don’t be fooled as this being the last on the list giving it third place. Whilst others may rate this a 4 or even a 3, I particularly liked the fast flowing queue (which wasn’t too long when we visited) and the bits of humour associated with the TV series. Additionally, the lengthy ride, which was a simulator looking at a high projection of Springfield, was much better than I had expected.
One that stuck out as a favourite 5 star but not the winner…
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Stardust Racers UEU – Out of all the rides, this was definitely the one I was most nervous waiting to board. Mikayla thought it would be a good idea to inform me that someone actually died on this ride six months prior, without me knowing the person had a pre-existing spine condition. You can choose the left or right side of the track as you race each other, but I don’t think it makes much of a difference as the tracks seem parallel for the most part. Queues were not too bad. Having only recently opened in October 2025, the ride is located in the middle of nowhere and doesn’t belong in a specific ‘land’. It is however a fast, thrilling ride that does well to build tension and thanks to my heavy weighting towards rollercoasters it takes second place!
And the winner is…
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐+⭐ Jurassic Park VelociCoaster UIA – As contentious as many will find other choices, I’m confident that I’ve picked a good’un as my favourite. Let’s start with the main event. The rollercoaster is a good length and features countless spins, inversions and corkscrews as the track extends over the lake.
From the start, you are boosted at great speed into the ride and if you fail to take a deep breath, good luck catching up for the rest of the ride. On my first experience I ACTUALLY THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE, which is EXACTLY what I was after from a rollercoaster (without dying obviously…).
I’m trying to avoid spoilers but if you’re here just for a nose, take a look at the official ride video that can be watched HERE. That corkscrew at 01:05 though….
For my number one ride, I’ve also determined positives that it didn’t have the longest queue, didn’t break down as much as other big-hitters and larger seats as standard, which were a bit tight but understandably so!
There’s also a nice story. We visited the ride on our first day at Universal. It was fair to say that we had a bit of a Disney hangover and was very cautious whether the Universal parks could match the vibe of our first week.
Walking up to the ride, I tried the test seat and must have been really pleased I could fit / go on the ride. A member of staff wandering around noticed my jubilation, and for no reason whatsoever, gave us not two, but four express passes to enjoy any ride. The chances of the bloke reading this is 0.0000001%, but cheers mate, you made our day, and the start of a great week in Universal. Don’t ask me what I’d choose in a Disney v Universal winner. I can not decide.
